Organization Description:

imec is an R&D hub for nano- and digital technologies. We believe in the combination of extremely talented people and a world-class infrastructure to enable a prosperous and sustainable future for all.

Job Description:

Sustainability is one of the key challenges of our society, with critical situations in climate change, resources depletion and pollution. However, the evolution of semiconductor technologies has been driven for decades by other factors, focusing on the increase of performance, the reduction of power consumption, continuous area scaling and cost reduction.  Nevertheless, the surging demand of chips puts the semiconductor industry’s environmental impact even more in the spotlight. Therefore, imec developed sustainability metrics to assess the environmental footprint of the current and the upcoming technology nodes, linked with the development of more sustainable solutions. This requires a holistic view on fabrication processes and technologies. Therefore, we are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join this exciting project to build a more sustainable future for semiconductor manufacturing.

  • You will work in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment in close cooperation with researchers, scientists, hardware engineers, device and process experts, equipment vendors, industrial assignees, and operators to evaluate process flows for logic and memory devices for current and future semiconductor technologies.
  • You will work in a team to carry out life-cycle-analysis (LCA) and map out the ecological footprint of these processes, such as carbon footprint, water, and material usage down to the required levels, and identify culprits in the process to develop future eco-friendly technologies.
  • You will guide the construction and verification of databases of process and fab information, working in close collaboration with your unit process step team colleagues, the integration engineers, as well as the hardware and engineering teams supporting the FAB operations.
  • You will enable, follow up and report out on potential initiatives to develop future eco-friendly unit process related technologies to reduce the ecological footprint of the IC industry.
